Since Thorns of Deceit was published in December I have had the opportunity to talk to a lot of fantastic people about the book, the City of Fountains series, and writing in general. As I prepare to launch No Stone Unturned (Book 2 in the City of Fountains series) I decided I’d share my answers to some of the most common questions.
If you follow me on Facebook then you have gotten a glimpse of my writing spaces and even a bit of my creative process. What you may not know is what inspired the City of Fountains series.
In the very first blog post I shared that in 2002 I began a career in law enforcement. Many thought I was crazy for trying and some thought I would not be able to do the job. It was absolutely one of the best decisions of my life. I had a job I truly loved. I loved patrolling my city’s streets and eventually investigating the sex crimes that occurred there. Many times, even after an excruciatingly long day, I would think to myself, “I can’t believe I get paid to do this!” It is one of the best decisions I ever made and if I had the chance to do it all over again I would. Without hesitation. That decision opened my life up to so many incredible people and experiences way beyond just the job. And my life is much richer because of this.
The idea of writing a book came early in my career. Like many other people in the law enforcement community I contemplated keeping a journal (and even started a time or two). Truth is often stranger than fiction and I wanted to remember it all so that when I retired I could write about it. Journalling did not stick, but as one of my favorite Sergeant’s used to say “I have the mind of a steel trap.” And some things never leave you.
As you might guess, my personal experiences have played a huge part in the writing of the City of Fountains series. The concept behind Thorns of Deceit and other novels in the City of Fountains series are inspired by calls for service I answered and cases I investigated, but none of them will follow any single case to its truest form. Some of the characters are based on a specific person and some are a combination of people in my life. My hope is that as you read each word you will love the stories and recurring characters as much as I love those who inspired them. In the end, I hope each one will leave you breathless and wanting more.
No Stone Unturned is scheduled to be released on June 5, 2018 and book 3, Cross the Line, is about one-third of the way written with December as my projected release date.
