Writer’s Block

Writer’s block.  fullsizeoutput_2b2fThis is something all writer’s are affected by at some point and time.  It may last a few moments or a few years. The remedies for overcoming it are as widespread as the reasons for having it. Regardless of the cause it can be frustrating.
I don’t have a sure-fire cure for writer’s block, but I can tell you some things that have worked for me.

  1. Take a break.  Trying to force the words onto paper (or my computer) only makes me feel more stuck.
  2. Do some other creative task.  I take photographs, painting furniture, or make wooden signs.  I find that being creative in other ways helps me find the answers causing the block.fullsizeoutput_2a83

  4. Pick up a book.  I love to read.  Sometimes I just need to read someone else’s words.
  5. Go back to the beginning of your project and start the editing process. I find when I don’t know where I want to go it helps to review what I’ve already done.
  6. Turn off the internet and TV.  I find both can be very distracting. It is too easy to get lost in a television program or social media instead of focusing on the work at hand.
  7. Turn on some music.  What I put on depends on what I’m working on. If I’m working on the City of Fountains series I will put on Pandora to my Chris Daughtry or Nick Lachey station. If I really need to focus I’ll put on something instrumental.  When I work on Taming Wild Ponies I put on 80’s music to take me back in time since that is the era the story takes place.  Music can be transcending.fullsizeoutput_27b4

The most important thing you can do if you suffer from writer’s block is not give up. You have a story to tell – allow yourself some grace when it gets hard.
Happy writing!
