Writer’s block.
This is something all writer’s are affected by at some point and time. It may last a few moments or a few years. The remedies for overcoming it are as widespread as the reasons for having it. Regardless of the cause it can be frustrating.
I don’t have a sure-fire cure for writer’s block, but I can tell you some things that have worked for me.
- Take a break. Trying to force the words onto paper (or my computer) only makes me feel more stuck.
- Do some other creative task. I take photographs, painting furniture, or make wooden signs. I find that being creative in other ways helps me find the answers causing the block.

Get outside. I love walking on the beach, riding my bicycle, and playing in the dirt. These activities help me clear my mind.- Pick up a book. I love to read. Sometimes I just need to read someone else’s words.
- Go back to the beginning of your project and start the editing process. I find when I don’t know where I want to go it helps to review what I’ve already done.
- Turn off the internet and TV. I find both can be very distracting. It is too easy to get lost in a television program or social media instead of focusing on the work at hand.
- Turn on some music. What I put on depends on what I’m working on. If I’m working on the City of Fountains series I will put on Pandora to my Chris Daughtry or Nick Lachey station. If I really need to focus I’ll put on something instrumental. When I work on Taming Wild Ponies I put on 80’s music to take me back in time since that is the era the story takes place. Music can be transcending.

The most important thing you can do if you suffer from writer’s block is not give up. You have a story to tell – allow yourself some grace when it gets hard.
Happy writing!
